When Ann Moses asked me if I'd do a monthly column for you TIGER BEAT readers, I thought the idea was a gas! You see, I'm kind of shy, and sometimes find it hard to talk to people. But like many shy people, when it comes to expressing myself through writing, I can ramble on and on.
I love to read the letters you write to me. They make me feel like I really know you. Of course, I can never begin to answer all of the mail I get, but by doing this column I will be able to share some of my thoughts and feelings with you. By rapping with you every month we can become better friends, and that's exactly what I want!
MY TYPICAL DAY - Since I want you to get to know me better, I thought I'd start out by telling you how I spend an ordinary day when I'm working on "Here Come the Brides." It begins when my alarm goes off at 6:30 a.m. That's the part I hate most - getting out of bed that early.
I'm kind of slow-moving in the morning, and since I have to be on the set at 7:00 a.m. I plan ahead. The night before I take out whatever I'm going to wear, which is usually a pair of slacks and a shirt or sweater. Then I shower, shave, brush my teeth, (yawning and stretching the whole time!) and gulp a glass of orange juice on my way out the door.
All this has taken me about 25 minutes, so it's a good thing I live so close to the studio! Once in a while I don't have to be on the set until 9:00 a.m. and then I make myself toast and eggs, go over my script once more and just generally move a lot slower.
SEEING CO-STARS - Once I'm at work I go into the room where they do the makeup. Someone has usually gone out for coffee and donuts and I sit around with David, Bridget or someone else from the cast while we're waiting to be made up. By now we're all getting tuned in to the day ahead, and we talk mostly about the scenes we're about to shoot. Then I dash to my trailer and change my clothes.
Once I'm on the set, I spend lots of time going over my lines one more time before the actual filming. I've memorized them the night before, but I like to be as letter-perfect as possible! I have to give Jeremy's stutter lots of practice too, because it has to be just enough - not too much.
I've been very lucky with the people I work with. On "Shindig" it was always fun to talk to people and goof around between takes, and the "Brides" cast is the same. Everybody is friendly with everyone else. Sometimes David Soul and I do some harmonizing just to fool around (We've never got a standing ovation from anybody, but actually we don't sound bad!)
ENJOY LUNCH HOUR - The morning just flies by, and before I know it, it's time for lunch. Since there isn't anyplace to eat on the lot, I usually dash off to the nearby Yankee Pedler in Burbank for a quick bite. There isn't too much time, so I'm in my makeup and costume. It doesn't attract much attention. Besides, at lunch time the restaurant is full of people from neighboring sets.
I often eat with somebody from the cast or crew and it's a relaxing hour or so. I order Eggs Benedict for lunch a lot, especially if I've missed my breakfast! Even though I don't care for desserts I do love rich foods, so I'm glad I don't have any weight problems!
Then it's back to work again. Often in the afternoons somebody comes by to interview me. If I have time, I take them to my dressing room which is a trailer close by the set. With all this going on, and people coming by to say hello, it's 7:00 p.m., time to go home before I know it! I guess the time goes by so fast because I'm doing what I really love to do and working with such an outasite bunch of people.
USUALLY GO HOME - I'm pretty tired by now, and most of the time I just go straight home, instead of stopping someplace for dinner. It's been a long day, and I don't feel like getting dressed and going out. In fact, I don't date very much during the week because I don't think I would be very good company, and I like to show a girl the best time I can!
So it's back to my apartment where I fix myself dinner and go over my lines for the next day at the same time. As soon as I come in the door I put my stereo on full blast. It helps me relax and unwind. I usually make myself quickie things for dinner, like steak or chops and a salad.
By the time I've cleared up the dishes and memorized the script, it's after 10, and I'm beginning to yawn again, so I set my alarm and jump into the sack. In about one minute, I'm asleep!
Well, that's a typical day for me. As I read this over, it doesn't really sound very exciting, but take my word for it, it often is! Unexpected things are happening all the time, and one day is never the same as the next. I think that's what I love about show business!
Now I've told you how I spend an average day - I want to know more about you. I hope you'll write to me and tell me all about yourself - what you do, how you think and feel, and also what you'd like me to talk to you about in future columns. I'll be waiting to hear from you!
Love,
Bobby
