Rialto Car Show 2001

THE BEST BOBBY EXPERIENCE EVER

I wouldn't trade this weekend for 20 concerts!!!!  It started with an absolutely perfect flight to California.  I was not scared in the least to fly...what I WAS scared about was the wait to get through security at the airport!  But we breezed right through though and were on our way to see Bobby.  It was an absolute joy to leave Chicago where it was 35 degrees with 60 mph winds and arrive in sunny Burbank, CA where it was 82 degrees!

Now, onto Saturday...oh what a day!!  We arrived in Rialto at about 9:30 and a group of us loitered around in the parking lot waiting for Bobby to arrive.  At about 10:00 we spotted his car driving down the street in front of the school. He turned into the parking lot and headed right for us honking his horn.  I know we're used to seeing him pull up in a limo with Ward looming overhead, but Bobby drove up in his own car by himself right into the lot.  I think that's what was so great about this weekend.   It wasn't like we were there to see teen idol Bobby Sherman.  We were there to see our friend Bobby Sherman.  Of course, none of my other friends make my lip tremble when I see them, so maybe I should call him a "special" friend!! LOL!!

So, anyway, he got out of his car wearing his San Bernardino Sheriff's uniform...gun, handcuffs, the whole nine yards.  And although I had told people if he showed up in his uniform that I would die on the spot, I'm happy to report that I did not!  He started out right away with his wonderful sense of humor.  He had a wire coming out of his ear (I assume leading to a police radio) and Debra said to him "you have something in your ear".  To which he replied, "I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you, I have something in my ear"!!  LOL!!  Although he was only supposed to be there for about a half hour total, he probably spent at least that long just talking to us, taking pictures, and signing autographs.  Everyone was able to get a picture with him and talk to him on a personal basis.  It wasn't like a concert where you get two seconds with him.  At one point, we were talking about spaghetti sauce recipes and he was telling me how he makes his!!  Too cool!!  I ALMOST forgot that I was talking to BOBBY SHERMAN...I said ALMOST!!  Finally, I think the DJ was getting impatient waiting for him, and made the announcement that Bobby was there (like we didn't already know) and called him over for the interview.  It was a brief interview where he was asked about his cars and how he named his dogs.  I guess the DJ had been brushing up on Bobby trivia with the teen magazines!!  LOL!!  When the interview was over, Bobby and Fred went to look at the cars.  Fred, who had driven up with us, took over as bodyguard, but he's not nearly as scary as Ward!! LOL!!  I kept joking around with him by calling him Ward and he hit me!!  Abuse charges are pending by the way, Fred.  hehehe!!  Fred was even nice enough to pose for pictures with us...can't imagine Ward doing that!!

As they walked around looking at the cars, I REALLY wanted to follow them like a puppy dog, but thought it was best to let them enjoy their guy stuff looking at cars.   Besides, we were having fun singing Bobby songs!!  The DJ played some of his hits and we were all singing and dancing in front of the KOLA booth.  At one point, the DJ interviewed several of us and was surprised that people came from as far away as Chicago to see Bobby.  I guess he doesn't know what die-hard fans he has.  We also got interviewed by someone else from the radio station later and did some promo pieces for them.  It was LOADS of fun!!

Like I said, Bobby was only supposed to be there for about half an hour, but he was probably there closer to two hours.  After he made his rounds looking at the cars, we saw him coming towards us and knew he would be leaving soon.  Someone stopped him so we could get a group shot with  him.  I had actually wondered off at that point, but luckily someone called me over so I could be in the picture.  But sadly, by the time I got there, there were so many people behind him that I couldn't find a place to stand.  So, I just had to squat down right next to him...of course, I didn't want to...but I wanted to be in the picture you know!!  LOL!!  When I squatted down next to him, I realized that everyone had their hands on him, so I had to find a spot to put my hand.  Okay, get your mind out of the gutter!!  I rested my hand on his knee!!  Luckily, we had to take the picture several times with several cameras so I got  to keep my hand on his knee for quite some time.  WOW!!!!!!

Finally it was time for him to leave so we walked him over to his car and said our goodbyes.  He was so sweet and so appreciative that we had all come out to see him.   He drove off with us waving until he was out of sight.  IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN A MORE PERFECT DAY!!  Thank you, thank you, thank you, Bobby!!

And a couple other thank yous.  I want to give a HUGE, HUGE, HUUUUUUUUUUGE thank you to Debra for "babysitting" for Chris and me this weekend.  She made everything so easy and fun for us and is a wonderful person.  She did everything except tuck us into bed at night!!  LOL!!  She even went so far as to take us sightseeing on Sunday.  Chris and I had planned on taking a bus down Ventura Blvd. just to see what we could see, but Debra took us to Bel Air (didn't see Sanchez there though), into the Hollywood hills, and to the Santa Monica pier.  It was a beautiful day and Debra is a beautiful person.  Love ya, babe!

Another a big thank you goes to Charlyn who was gracious enough to invite us to her beautiful home in the mountains after the car show.  It was funny because her house is on a slope and I kept stumbling downhill everytime I came out of the house to have a cigarette...and that was even before her husband started mixing up mudslides and shooters for us!!  Actually, come to think of it, I wasn't stumbling nearly as much AFTER that!! LOL!!

And also thank you to Debbie A. who took us out for breakfast on Sunday.  What a sweetie!

So, as you can see it was a PERFECT BOBBY WEEKEND!!
